Tattoo Removal Scarring: What’s Normal and What’s Not
Two components significantly reduce the possibility of scarring: specialists who know what they’re doing and use the laser appropriately, and aftercare. If you have sensitive skin, you’re more likely to see scarring than others, but the odds are still low. At Lexington Tattoo Removal, our specialists explain how to prevent tattoo removal scars and encourage the healing process after tattoo removal. Learn how we can help you and the steps we take to ensure you have the best possible experience.

Does Laser Tattoo Removal Cause Scars?
Typically, laser tattoo removal doesn’t cause scars, but everyone’s skin is different. This is why we have you sit down with a specialist before you begin your treatment. Your specialist will assess your skin and your tattoo and prepare you for what to expect during the session. We also expect you to follow our recommendations for before and aftercare to avoid scarring.
However, in certain situations, scarring after tattoo removal increases:
- The tattoo already has scarring.
- You’re prone to scarring.
- You have sensitive skin.
- The tattoo is in a sensitive area with thin skin.
How Does Using a Specialist Help Reduce Scarring?
Meeting with a specialist informs them about how to proceed with your tattoo and which of our two lasers to use. If you have any known skin conditions, inform the specialist so they have that information and can make the best recommendations for you.
Our basic procedure starts by cooling your skin using our Zimmer Cryo Cooler to as low as 62 degrees Fahrenheit. This reduces swelling, pain, and itching, so you’re less likely to scratch at it, again reducing the likelihood of scarring. Using our Tattoo Numb Cream 2 hours before your session and after your session will cool and calm your skin, reducing any negative impact.
How to Prevent Tattoo Removal Scars
The healing process for tattoo removal involves proper aftercare to avoid scarring. We can do our part, but if you don’t take care of your skin between sessions, scarring becomes more likely.
Follow these instructions regarding aftercare to avoid scarring and other skin issues:
- Schedule your next appointment at least 6 weeks out.
- Keep the area clean and dry.
- Apply ointments, like Tattoo Numb Cream, antibiotic cream, or Vaseline, several times per day for 3 days.
- Let scabs or blisters heal without picking at them.
- Use cool compresses if your skin feels hot.
- Skip sun tanning, showers, pools, and saunas for 2-3 days.
- Opt for low-impact workouts that don’t cause sweating or friction for at least 24 hours.
Soon, your tattoo will be gone!
