Does Skin Type Affect Laser Tattoo Removal Results?

Lexington Tattoo Removal • May 26, 2026

Skin type influences how laser tattoo removal works, including how many sessions a tattoo may require, which ink colors respond well, and what side effects are most likely. At Lexington Tattoo Removal, our specialists will take your medical history and assess your skin tone, melanin levels, and sensitivity during your consultation to estimate pricing and the number of sessions required.

How Skin Type Affects Laser Tattoo Removal

Laser tattoo removal delivers ultra-short pulses of energy, measured in picoseconds (one trillionth of a second), that shatter ink into fragments small enough for the body's immune system to carry away. Melanin gives skin its color and also absorbs laser energy. The more melanin present, the more carefully treatment needs to be calibrated to target the ink without affecting the surrounding tissue.

Fitzpatrick Skin Types and Tattoo Removal

The Fitzpatrick Scale is a classification system that groups skin into six types based on melanin levels and UV light response. It's a good way to understand how your skin type may affect tattoo removal results and the number of sessions needed. Lighter skin types are generally the most straightforward to treat; darker skin often requires greater care.

  • Type I: Very fair skin that always burns and never tans, typically paired with red or light blonde hair and blue, grey, or green eyes. Low melanin levels keep hyperpigmentation risk low, and most ink colors are good candidates for removal.
  • Type II: Fair skin that usually burns and tans with difficulty, commonly associated with red or blonde hair and blue, hazel, or green eyes. The melanin profile is similar to Type I, and most ink colors can be removed with a low risk of pigmentation issues.
  • Type III: Medium skin that sometimes has a mild burn and gradually tans. Higher melanin levels than in Types I and II increase the potential for hyperpigmentation, though most ink colors can still be removed with proper calibration.
  • Type IV: Olive to medium-brown skin that rarely burns and tans easily, typically matched with dark hair and eyes. Higher melanin increases the risk of both hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation. Our PicoWay® Laser can reduce most ink colors with this skin type, including black, green, red, blue, and purple.
  • Type V: Brown to dark brown skin that very rarely burns and tans very easily. Melanin sensitivity is higher, increasing the risk of pigmentation changes and potential scarring. Treatment often requires a measured approach, and more sessions may be required.
  • Type VI: Very dark brown to black skin that never burns. This skin type is most susceptible to pigmentation issues and scarring from laser treatments and typically requires a careful plan and additional sessions, but most ink colors can be reduced.
